Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) was born in Lancaster, the second son of the Rev'd Frederick Binyon. He was educated at St Paul's School, London, and at Trinity College Oxford. In 1893 he entered the Department of Printed Books at the British Museum, transferring to the Department Prints and Drawings two years later.
